TWO POSSIBLE GENRE CHOICES!

As soon as the Cambridge portfolio project was introduced to the class, I immediately thought about making an action/comedy film. These are my favorite genres, with most of my favorite films implementing aspects of both! In order to understand these two genres better, I have done a set amount of research.

 

GENRE 1- COMEDY

WHATS IN A COMEDY FILM?

Comedy films, as a whole, typically have a happy ending and a lighthearted feel along with vibrant colors within its mise-en scene. The general purpose of this genre is to emphasize and provide humor to an audience. Complex plots are also not commonly found, with most being simple to follow as the main focus is in the writing. Superb acting and dialogue is what is absolutely needed to make a comedy film great. There are a wide variety of techniques for humor in this genre, ranging from slapstick jokes to clever writing and puns.

 

 

(Dumb and Dumber-1994)


Dumb and Dumber, for example, relies mostly on physical and slapstick comedy as both actors deliver over the top performances with their expressions and actions, making the movie memorable to many. The film also utilizes absurd situations that the main characters find themselves in due to their stupidity.

These are certain forms of humor that appeal to different types of people and may not appeal to others, as its genre is subjective with various other forms of humor in store, but this movie was still successful as a comedy nonetheless.

GENRE 2- ACTION

                                                                     (Inception- 2010)

WHATS IN AN ACTION FILM?

Usually, action films are fast paced productions that focus more on action sequences within its story instead of convoluted dialogue and character development. A strong and likeable protagonist is also imperative to this genre, as viewers need a reason to care about the riveting situations they will find themselves in. In these said riveting situations, good cinematography is needed so audiences can clearly tell what is happening during the action.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem as an action comedy movie, embraces both genres as it provides incredible dynamic action with fast paced choreography while keeping the tone fun and lighthearted with witty banter, jokes, and plenty of slapstick humor. In addition to this, all the protagonists are likeable, memorable characters that keep the audience engaged in the story while making them care about the high stakes they have to go through!
